Gym Leader Jasmine’s Magnemite

No Pokemon Gym Leader is complete without their Pokemon. Gym Leader Jasmine has a few to choose from, Steelix was just too big for a convention and i’ve always thought the plush scale versions look odd. There are a few other options, but I have always had a soft spot for Magnemite, so it just had to be.

Figuring out the template for him was an interesting prospect, two options, either as segments like an orange or in two pieces like a tennis ball. I opted for the tennis ball option. Once i had found a template online and tested it created a decent shape, i was confident i could scale up the design. I figured out the circumference of the sphere i wanted, and worked out how i could make that work with the pattern, essentially the measurement of one down its full length and the narrow central width of the other piece. Make sure to allow for seam edges.

on top of this template i worked out the size of the eye. I knew i would need to sew the eye onto the body before i created the sphere, this helped me make sure it stayed central and even. i chose to work in cheap fleece, this wasn’t the best choice in hind sight because it pills after some time. it also stretches in weird ways. to combat this, i chose to include a layer of interface fabric.

so once the fabric pieces were cut out and the eye was sewn on, i marked a few points on both pieces to help me line things up. It was then a case of pinning and sewing the sphere, leaving an area open to allow turning the piece the right way out.

Now i had the sphere it was time to figure out the magnets, this was a case of sitting back and looking at the sizing from a distance against a reference image.
